The driving in Johannesburg is not very easy, many roads have potholes, driving around as a tourist makes you a target for thiefs, and the way the minibus taxis drive around here could lead to an accident for even experienced drivers. therefore use a cab/driver/shuttle in Joburg.

If you are going to be in Cape Town, then you can hire your own car. But that's only if you are going to visit your family, and if you are going to be doing activities that many tourists won't be doing. But if you are coming down with just your family, and its your first time here, and if you are doing the typical touristy activities then you are better off using a Taxi/driver/hotel-shuttle. Its not too expensive and you will be able to get to all the hotspots hassle free.
