The Algarve is the best place to enjoy sun sea and sand in Portugal. The climate is great and there are over 100 miles of the finest soft golden sand beaches. The region runs from the Atlantic Ocean near Sagres in the West to Vila Real de Santo António in the East - on the Spanish border. Along the waterfront you will find championship facilities for water sports, golf, tennis, fine restaurants and horseback riding.



The center of the Algarve is from Faro. Sandstone cliffs that open to modest bays and harbors line it. This area because, of it's popularity, also attracts the most people. From Lagos west to Sagres you have high granite cliffs, grottoes, small coves and especially scenic areas. It was here in Sagres that Prince Henry the Navigator resided and trained the Portuguese Navigators who participated in Portugal's Age of Discovery.

The Algarve offers great coastal and inland walks. Cycling is also popular with mountain bikes especially recommended. Sailing and deep sea fishing are available, especially off the central coast. Scuba diving and waterskiing equally can be arranged. Meanwhile inland river cruises across the Rio Arade or the Rio Guadiana are a pleasant option. The Algarve has more than a dozen equestrian centres usually found between Faro and Albufera. There are also many seaside golf courses in this area. The more luxury end hotels provide tennis courts.

The Algarve has more recently become a popular tourist destination, with the construction during the 1960s of Faro International Airport. In addition to its beautiful beaches and golf courses, the Algarve’s cities, towns and mountain villages offer interesting attractions and opportunities to experience the best of rural and metropolitan Portuguese culture.
