First time properly travelling - Need some advice!

Hi,
I'm taking a year out between school and university and looking to travel for around 6 months with 6 months working at home.

I'm going to Swaziland for a month to see friends, after I was planning on travelling to Mozambique to scuba dive then on to madagascar.
After that I'm flying to Calcutta to see friends for a month. Would really like to then head to Nepal and Tibet to trek in the Himalayas and visit temples.
-Firstly can anyone reccomend anything to do in any of those countries or anywhere else i should visit in those regions?
-Secondly I was hoping to arrive at both Swazinland and Calcutta and then develop some sort of plan. For instance I was going to travel to Mozambique to a reccomended scuba diving area and speak to people about what's best to do, then see how it's best to get to Madagascar or what else to do in Mozambique.
Is this naive and foolish of me and should i pre-book it all, or, as i suspect will this way be far more exciting, adventurous and challenging?

Any advice on anything travelling orientated or on any of those countries would be greatly appreciated!

You are certainly not naive or stupid. You plan the trip travel should be. Do not go completely blind, knowing in advance if you plan to go somewhere at the right time of year. Some places would be quite uncomfortable at the wrong time of year, also get information on visas, but otherwise playing by ear.
