Flying is the cheapest way to get from Sydney to Cairns.
A sort of bus pass would probably be cheaper labor to make their way along the coast. Add some flights to skip some sections may also reduce the cost.

Thanks for your valuable suggestion. I think When you come on a short stay visa, you are expected to have sufficient money to fund your entire stay without working. The amount of money you will need when you arrive will depend on your travel plans and the type of accommodation you'll be staying in but for a month you should have a minimum of $1000 If you intend staying in backpacker accommodation without many tourist activities and not much traveling.
